In Finale 2011 and earlier, if the first note you are re-pitching is tied, the tie is lost when you re-pitch, so you have to go back and reenter it. Sibelius has a slight advantage here as well. You enter the notes, articulations, phrasing, dynamics, lyrics etc into the first part, then copy this part down to the second staff, click on the first note and play in the new pitches for the second staff very quickly. When you are entering music in step-time, every additional step takes time.įor choral music and other types of music which is largely homophonic, Re-Pitching is a powerful tool in both Sibelius and Finale, potentially saving hours of time. For instance, if you respell a note enharmonically outside of the key signature, Sibelius follows common practice and remembers whether an enharmonic is spelled as a sharp or flat earlier in the same bar, while Finale requires you to respell the note again if it occurs later in the same bar. NOTE ENTRY: I would say Finale and Sibelius are pretty much equal for simple music like a single staff lead sheet. Both FInale 2011 and Sibelius 7 offer several ways to enter notes, including more than one way to step-enter notation. Each program has several pages to control how your document will look, what key and time signature will be used, whether there is a pickup in the music and so forth.
